State Convention Coming Soon!
On behalf of all of us, thanks to our previous President, Bill McCabe, for his wonderful service to the organization. Due to his work transfer, he has been unable to fill out his term. So that means that I will fulfill Bill’s term and we are now in need of a Vice President.
We have some very important events coming up this summer:
First will be the Division Fundraiser for Kate Klemmer, a postulate to the Sisters and Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary community. These are the sisters that serve at St. Michael, St. James, St. Joseph, and Bishop O’Connell in the Diocese of Arlington. Kate needs to retire her student loans before she can fully join. I have already secured Kevin James to provide music at the event (scheduled for Sunday, June 30th starting at 4 PM at Ireland’s 4P’s in Falls Church). We will have Irish Dancers and a live auction. So far I have a signed baseball from the Washington Nationals, Gift Certificates from the Auld Shebeen and 4P’s, and wine tastings from a couple different vineyards. I will be receiving items from One Life Fitness and CDs from Andy Cooney. I am also hoping to get some golf equipment and already have a round of golf at Congressional Country Club from new member Bob Stroh. Please consider finding and item that we can auction off, be it something you have or a service you can provide.
Second, our AOH State Convention will be held July 19-21 at the Fredericksburg Hospitality House and Convention Center in Fredericksburg, VA. Are you interested in attending? We have a handful of delegate spots available. For those that need their Major Degrees, the exemplification will be held on Sunday morning of the Convention Weekend.
Finally, summer means Baseball!! J J has already made arrangements with the Potomac Nationals for a great game experience. I’ll leave those details to J J to furnish. I am hoping that our own Tim Higgins will walk around with a Jayson Werth jersey and say he is on a rehab assignment. If you haven’t seen Tim, he is a DEAD RINGER for the Nationals right fielder.
Please also take a look at our new website – www.msgrbradican.com – I’m hoping that we can use the website to keep in touch and to publish our newsletter as well.
Finally, we have initiated three new members over the past two meetings and we should have three more joining at the June meeting. Please think of a fellow parishioner or friend that you can ask to join our Order. And come on out to the meeting to meet the new guys and refresh your friendships with the old.

A Bit of Irish Culture
St. John’s Eve in Old Ireland
At sunset, on June 23rd, another of the ancient fire festivals begins. This midsummer festival was known as St. John’s Eve, or Bonfire Night, and not that long ago, it was a wide-spread tradition throughout Ireland.
The following description is from a piece written in 1943 by an old schoolmaster who lived in West Limerick:
“…old people of thirty years ago and more remembered how the fire used to be lit exactly at sunset and had to be watched and tended until long after midnight. Prayers use to be said to obtain God’s blessing on the crops, then at the peak of summer bloom.
Round the fire gathered young and old. There was much fun and music. A dance was started and games were played.”
